Judge’s Comments: The cover has a nostalgic, “old-timey” feel. I also like the use of practical assessments and “how-tos” to engage membership. The call to action “how you can participate” is fabulous; I love when publications can combine practicality with entertainment.

2010 Silver Award: International Wood: The Guide to Applications, Sources and Trends

Judge’s Comments: Great cover! The perspective, lighting were fantastic, and the contrast of the fonts made the cover pop. The ads were all relevant to the publication audience, and the layout was crisp. I like that though there was not a great amount of variance in the color palette, the selected colors complemented the “wood” focus of the association. The publication is content-heavy without being overwhelming, and all content is relevant, no “filler text.” I love the pullout reference guide on distributors. And as an added bonus, the publication smelled like wood!

Judge’s Comments: This title shows excellence in all categories. It is well designed and produced. Every page draws you in through the layout, graphics, photography, illustration and typography from the front cover to the back page. This is a youthful and fun publication and very geared to the university readership. The content is diverse and there is something for all disciplines. This title definitely addresses the organization’s mission and goals.
