Monthly Trade Assn Magazine – Organization budget greater than $1-million

Judge’s Comments: I really enjoyed layout subtleties, including text justification. Where there were not original photographs available/desirable, the caricatures and other original images were fantastic substitutions. Varied backdrops with complimentary fonts. Good use of graphs/charts to compliment content.

Judge’s Comments: The quality of the publication was great. Though there are not a lot of original photographs included, the backdrops and other layout strategies were fantastic (true of all of the L.E. publications). There were very few ads; almost 100% strong content. The articles were lengthy and informative, and the colors and layout were subtle, and did not distract from the content, but were complimentary.

Monthly Trade Assn Magazine – Organization budget greater than $1-million

Judge’s Comments: The quality of images in this publication is amazing. The content is varied and all relevant to the audience, and while the stories are not lengthy, there is enough information conveyed in each to inform the audience without losing them. I also like the call to action, including the pre-written letters to representatives.

Entrant’s Notes

1. The magazine is carried by its two strongest features, “Green is Green” and “Decorated in Shame,” both of which highlight a major member (and military) concern and incorporate a striking and appropriate design with quality images.

2. Online extras helped make this issue pop. “Decorated in Shame” featured a hand-drawn mugshot gallery, which when viewed online, included pop-up information about the various phony veterans’ crimes. As an item in MOAA’s NEX e-mail newsletter, the military-specific tax feature “Before You File” got a second life with a high click-through rate.

3. This issue also included prewritten “call to action” letters that members could sign, stamp, and mail to the chairs of the Committee on Armed Services. Generally 40,000 to 60,000 letters are sent to legislators as the result of a “call to action” letter being printed in the magazine.
