May 15 is the Form 990 filing deadline for exempt organizations whose tax year ends on Dec. 31, unless the organization submitted Form 8868, Application for Extension of Time To File an Exempt Organization Return. An organization that fails to file for three consecutive years automatically loses its federal tax-exempt status.
ProPublica, a nonprofit investigative journalist organization, has launched a new service that allows users to search through Form 990s from the last ten years. Their Nonprofit Explorer uses data from the IRS, which recently began making Form 990 data available digitally to the public. Lindsay Nicholas, communications director at Guidestar, told the Chronicle of Philanthropy, “The more, the merrier. We think this data should be everywhere.”
