Arnie Robbins, former editor of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, will become executive director of the American Society of News Editors, effective July 9, after the association moves headquarters to the University of Missouri.
He succeeds Richard Karpel, who recently was named CEO of the Yoga Alliance, Arlington, Va.
Robbins resigned in May from the Post-Dispatch after 13 years as the editor and managing editor. During this time, he was an active member of ASNE. Before joining the Post-Dispatch in 1997, Robbins spent 13 years at the Minneapolis Star Tribune in various editing positions. He also worked at the Chicago Sun-Times.
He is a graduate of the Medill School of Journalism at Northwestern.
ASNE announced in April it will partner with the University of Missouri's journalism school. The association will relocate from Reston, Va., to the Donald W. Reynolds Journalism Institute on the university's Columbia campus. The organization will maintain an office in DC. Robbins said the ASNE-Missouri partnership was a big draw for him.
