Former Sen. Nelson to lead insurance commissioners organization

01/24/2013

National Association of Insurance Commissioners, Kansas City, Mo., selected former U.S. Sen. Ben Nelson (D-Neb.) as its new CEO.

Nelson succeeds Therese M. Vaughn, who left in November. Vaughn had led the association since 2009. COO Andrew Beal had been serving as acting CEO.

Nelson served in the Senate for two terms, and declined to run for a third term in November. He was deeply involved with crafting the Affordable Care Act, which NAIC will be involved with by ensuring states' compliance. Previously, Nelson served as governor of Nebraska from 1990 to 1998.

Previously, Nelson was EVP and chief of staff at NAIC, and director of the Nebraska Department of Insurance. He also was CEO of a private insurance company for several years.

Nelson earned a J.D. as well as undergraduate and graduate degrees in philosophy from the University of Nebraska.
