Nurse practitioners groups merge

11/29/2012

American Academy of Nurse Practitioners, Austin, Texas, and American College of Nurse Practitioners, Alexandria, Va., will consolidate effective Jan. 1.

The combined organization will be known as the American Association of Nurse Practitioners with about 40,000 members.

ACNP CEO David Hebert is now also CEO of AANP and will be chief staff executive of the new association. The administrative office will be in Austin and the policy office in Washington.

Current AANP president Angela Golden and ACNP president-elect Ken Miller will become co-presidents at the new AANP conference in June.

The consolidation comes when there are fewer physicians pursuing primary care medicine, which in turn increases the role of nurse practitioners. The move also comes as the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act will add 30 million more to the insured in the U.S.
