The Transformation of Food Biotechnology

Case study: Winner of the Most Improved Category, TRENDS All Media Contest

03/31/2014

Publication: Food Biotechnology

Association: International Food Information Council

Challenge: The IFIC Foundation Biotech Communicators Guide was last updated in 2003, so the information on the latest scientific research, product pipeline, developments in regulation, as well as new forms of communication introduced in the last decade, needed to be included to bring this resource up to date. In addition, the old Guide had a dated appearance that today’s graphic design capabilities could really improve. Finally, we wanted to evolve the binder format of the old Guide into a more compact product that meets today's professionals’ needs for convenience and brevity.

What they did: IFIC Foundation received a grant from the U.S. Agriculture Department Foreign Agricultural Service to update this comprehensive resource. The revision process took about seven months and involved a number of people who contributed their time and expertise to updating the content and creating a new look for the Guide. In addition, the guide was reviewed by several of the best scientific and academic experts in the field of food biotechnology.

Results: We were incredibly pleased with the final product and have received a lot of positive feedback on the Guide from health professionals, educators, and other food and nutrition communicators. It has been distributed widely in hard copy and there is also a dedicated page on the IFIC Foundation website for the electronic version of the Guide to help increase the reach of this resource. The electronic version of the Guide can be viewed and downloaded at www.foodinsight.org/foodbioguide.aspx. – Lindsey Loving, IFIC food ingredient and technology communications senior director
