2010 Silver Award: American Journal of Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopedics

Scholarly / Technical / Scientific Journal – Organization budget greater than $1-million

Judge’s Comments: I like the contrast of color against a largely B & W backdrop.  The tone of the design compliments the content.

Scholarly / Technical / Scientific Journal – Organization budget greater than $1-million

Judge’s Comments: Effective and successful attempt at magazine design style and writing with technical material. Ads are appropriate and attractive to the magazine. Editing seems very clean, but more important consistent.

2010 Silver Award: Associations Now, May 2010

Monthly Professional Society Magazine – Organization budget greater than $1-million

Judge’s Comments: A magazine that is consistently good at serving its readers well. The content is strong, and there is a lot of it…and none feels like filler, so good for them! It hasn’t changed in a few years, so maybe AN is due a facelift. It is still a very attractive publication, especially since it has the added challenge of being on lighter grade paper. No publication in this category compares to AN’s advertising. Appropriate, attractive, and a lot of it, including glue-in booklets – very nice!

2010 Gold Award: Lighting Design + Application, October 2010

Monthly Professional Society Magazine – Organization budget greater than $1-million

Judge’s Comments: Nicely designed, and not overdesigned as many mags are these days. Also the design is not disjointed, having a consistency from one article to the next without it being boring or cookie cutter-looking. I also like that they went out of the box with the editorial copy – a lesson learned for lighting designers from the antics of LeBron James and that Jet Blue flight attendant: while a stretch, they made it work. Photography is beautiful, the ads are are beautiful, the copy is completely on target. Well done, LD+A!

2010 Bronze Award: The Parking Professional, March 2010

Monthly Trade Assn Magazine – Organization budget greater than $1-million

Judge’s Comments: I really enjoyed layout subtleties, including text justification.  Where there were not original photographs available/desirable, the caricatures and other original images were fantastic substitutions.  Varied backdrops with complimentary fonts.  Good use of graphs/charts to compliment content.

2010 Silver Award: The Language Educator, October 2010

Monthly Trade Assn Magazine – Organization budget greater than $1-million

Judge’s Comments: The quality of the publication was great.  Though there are not a lot of original photographs included, the backdrops and other layout strategies were fantastic (true of all of the L.E. publications).  There were very few ads; almost 100% strong content.  The articles were lengthy and informative, and the colors and layout were subtle, and did not distract from the content, but were complimentary.

2010 Gold Award: Military Officer Magazine, February 2010

Monthly Trade Assn Magazine – Organization budget greater than $1-million

Judge’s Comments:  The quality of images in this publication is amazing.  The content is varied and all relevant to the audience, and while the stories are not lengthy, there is enough information conveyed in each to inform the audience without losing them.  I also like the call to action, including the pre-written letters to representatives.

Entrant’s Notes

1. The magazine is carried by its two strongest features, “Green is Green” and “Decorated in Shame,” both of which highlight a major member (and military) concern and incorporate a striking and appropriate design with quality images.

2. Online extras helped make this issue pop. “Decorated in Shame” featured a hand-drawn mugshot gallery, which when viewed online, included pop-up information about the various phony veterans’ crimes. As an item in MOAA’s NEX e-mail newsletter, the military-specific tax feature “Before You File” got a second life with a high click-through rate.

3. This issue also included prewritten “call to action” letters that members could sign, stamp, and mail to the chairs of the Committee on Armed Services. Generally 40,000 to 60,000 letters are sent to legislators as the result of a “call to action” letter being printed in the magazine.
