    National Restaurant Association, Council of State Restaurant Associations and National Federation of Independent Business filed suit against the US Labor Dept. over an amended Fair Labor Standards Act regulation affecting businesses that employ tipped workers. The regulation makes substantive changes in the notice employers must provide to tipped employees about the tip credit. The groups said DOL ignored President Obama's expressed requirement that federal agencies weigh the effect of new regulations on businesses. Details:

    Center on Philanthropy at Indiana U., Indianapolis, received a $100,000 research grant from the Corporation for National and Community Service and the National Science Foundation in Washington, to help strengthen volunteering. The Center will study the personal and external factors that cause volunteering rates to rise and fall, allowing nonprofits to better anticipate and plan for changes. Details:

    Venable LLP, Washington, will hold a luncheon and webinar for association executives on "Understanding Compensable Time Issues for Nonprofits Under the Fair Labor Standards Act" 12-2pm July 12.
