New development to reapply for tax-exempt status in DC

Bloomberg reports notices will go out soon from city

ASAE is looking into a new requirement in DC that will require nonprofits in the capital to reapply for tax-exempt status every five years.

The new requirement was discussed at a DC Bar event this week, according to Bloomberg BNA. Priscilla Wicker, a tax auditor with the District’s Office of Chief Financial Officer, told attendees that the city will send notices soon that will explain the new requirement. Groups can resubmit the FR-163 exemption application up to 60 days before their current application is set to expire, Bloomberg reported.

ASAE found the Bloomberg article unclear on whether certain tax-exempts might be excluded from the requirement, and is looking into that.
