    TRENDS 2018 Association Executive of the Year - Arlene Pietranton

    Arlene A. Pietranton, PhD, CAE, CEO of the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association, is the Association TRENDS 2018 Association Executive of the Year.

    “We couldn’t be happier that Arlene Pietranton is the Executive of the Year,” TRENDS publisher Emily Howard said. “She is the embodiment of excellent, exemplary and formidable leadership for her association and industry, and for the association community.”

    Pietranton will be honored at the annual TRENDS Salute to Association Excellence, March 1 at the Capital Hilton in Washington. She will join the other TRENDS honorees at the Salute: Association Partner of the Year Edward Wendling, marketing global VP at Advanced Solutions International; the Leading Association Lobbyists; the Young & Aspiring Association Professionals; and the winners of the TRENDS All Media Contest.

    She became ASHA executive director in 2004, and her title changed to CEO several years later. Previously she was ASHA chief staff officer for speech-language pathology from 1996 to 2003. In this position, she liaised with the ASHA National Office units responsible for government relations and public policy, speech-language pathology practices, and special interest divisions. Earlier she was ASHA health services director from 1994 to 1996.

    Before joining ASHA she worked at the George Washington University Medical Center in Washington, where she held several clinical and administrative positions, including director of speech-language pathology and audiology services, director of rehabilitation services, and administrative director of the Neurological Institute.

    An ASHA Fellow, Pietranton has served as president of the District of Columbia Speech-Language-Hearing Association, a member of the ASHA Legislative Council, chair of the ASHA Political Action Committee, and a member of several committees of state and national professional and civic organizations.

    She is a Fellow and a past chair of ASAE. She is secretary of the board of the Council of Engineering and Scientific Society Executives; a public member of the Certified Financial Planning board; and co-chair of Montgomery Moving Forward, a collective impact initiative in Montgomery County, Maryland. Bisnow named her a 2015 Top Association & Nonprofit Innovator in its Trending 40 series, and CEO Update named her its 2015 Professional Society CEO of the Year.

    Pietranton earned a B.A. in biology, M.A. in speech-language pathology, and PhD in psychology at George Washington University.
