2013 Bronze Award: Middle Market Growth

Monthly Professional Society Magazine

Judge’s Comments: Middle Market Growth was launched in April 2013 as a digital only publication and “created 100% from the ground up for digital publication.” The association has more than succeeded in creating a cutting edge and interactive digital title. There are clear distinctions between each section. There are interactive buttons and embedded videos throughout the title. The creative team has come up with clever names for each section. There is excellent reader engagement throughout the issue along with links back to the main website. The design is easy to read on a computer screen and on a tablet. Other associations should use this title when they decide to create a digital only publication.

2013 Bronze Award: Crosscut: The official magazine of the North American Wholesale Lumber Association

Monthly Trade Association Magazine

Judge’s Comments: This recently redesigned magazine has certainly achieved its goal to “hit their members over the head with a 2 x 4” of content marketing. The association worked with their partner, GLC, to create a magazine that wasn’t” just another trade publication.” The striking cover design and typography instantly draws their readers into the issue. The fronts of book sections have fun and interesting infographics, typography and useful content. The well written feature has a striking design and fun graphics. The other features are equally well designed with clever elements that keep the reader engaged.

2013 Bronze Award: Journal of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics

Scholarly/Technical/Scientific Journal

Judge’s Comments: JAND must find a way to get away from the dirty paper stock that has enough see-through to be annoying. Also that dense of copy on that stock makes it hard to read. Otherwise, it’s a fine journal that serves its membership, and I like that its cover is interesting and modern, in contrast to the more traditional layout inside of a research journal

2013 Bronze Award: Women in Manufacturing: Connecting women in the manufacturing sector online

Social Media

Judge’s Comments: A majority of association now have some social media presence on all the major social sites. But this group has their community at the heart of their social media strategy at all times – supporting and connecting women in a male-dominated industry.  Therefore, their tactics are about much more than promoting and marketing their products and services, they are about fostering connectedness and the visibility of their target constituents. Their social media presence is not just friendly but supportive, helpful, empowering, connecting. Their sites are also full integrated with each other, so content shared in one place is accessible in every place.  Very, very well evolved and executed, mission-driven strategy.
