The issue is easy to read with its clean design, use of white space, varied graphics and a strong cover. This approach allows the readers to delve into the articles, departments and columns.

2013 Bronze Award: Building a Community of Excellence: TESOL International Association Annual Report

Judge’s Comments: This report is a very-well conceived and designed publication. And happy. The collection of TESOL member photographs on the front page — all of whom are smiling broadly, one even appears to be laughing — just made us want to open it up and see what all of the happy was about. The concept is similar to that of the 1st place winner — using individual testimony, juxtaposed with concise, yet descriptive information about the organization’s work over the past year. TESOL’s report also earned points for being an excellent publication that looks fantastic, yet gives the impression that the organization did not have to spend a ridiculous amount of money producing it. This is always a plus for a non-profit organization.

Judge’s Comments: The VFW Magazine group never disappoints. This content-rich tribute of the Korean War is a must-have for the veteran of this war or an avid history buff. Each feature is told like a short story, making each section of the book a must-read. The material is appropriately designed and presented for this audience, and the changing rubrics (or page headers) provoke reader engagement and curiosity.

2013 Bronze Award: 2013 NRPA Congress Program Book

Judge’s Comments: As a general rule, we believe that a conference program should not be a large and overwhelming document, nor should it be so heavy as to weigh down the conference bag. This program easily weighs in at one pound, but it is just so well done we had to include it in the winners’ circle. First, it combines elements found in the top two winners: Fold out inside cover — in this case with the local area map showing all convention hotels, folding out to a detailed map of the exhibit hall; and tabbed sections making each day’s events easy to find. Finally, the size of the publication is entirely justified because of the sheer size of the convention. There are no extraneous ads or information, it takes a book this size just to include all of the various events and sessions. Special kudos go out to the designer that was actually able to put hundreds of convention events and sessions into a concise and readable “Schedule at a Glance”.
