2012 Bronze Award: HR Magazine, October 2012

Monthly Professional Society Magazine

Judge’s Comments: This issue leads the reader in with the interested cover treatment and photography about the feature story about the way that companies are using social media to connect with company goals. The cover story has striking graphic elements throughout including breakout quotes, icons and data points. The other well written feature stories incorporate a strong graphic treatment on the opening spreads to provide topical information for the association membership. There is a strong tie-in to the organization’s digital presence including many links to website blogs and 2-D barcodes.

2012 Bronze Award: The Language Educator – October 2012

Monthly Trade Association Magazine

Judge’s Comments: This is a sophisticated and targeted membership title with a strong awareness of the member needs. The design is crisp and clean throughout the issue. The colorful graphics in the front of the book columns and departments grab the reader’s attention right away. The feature continues this creative use of graphics and strong design. The association is committed to getting the members up to date on technology issues with a special focus on social media in one of the features.

2012 Bronze Award: Textile Services

Most Improved Magazine or Journal

Judge’s Comments: Textile Services — Another entry that went further and changed names, stock, feel, and ad rev is up since the changes…that in itself is a testament that the redesign is a smart move. I’d suggest cutting back on the text point size by a half- or even a full point. Currently, it looks as if you were trying to stretch out copy, whether or not that is the intent.

2012 Bronze Award: HAI Mobile Screen Cleaner

Promotional Items

Judge’s Comments: A simple and inexpensive promotional item was the perfect fit for HAI’s mobile app launch. The fact that it was reusable and affixed to a marketing piece educating member’/s on the new app and its benefits was a winning combination.

2012 Bronze Award: American Journal of Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopedics – April 2012 Supplement

Scholarly/Technical/Scientific Journal

Judge’s Comments: Including the supplement actually hurt this entry this year, especially as it appears in the front of the book. But like the silver winner, I like that they are getting more bold with the use of photography, particularly color. And the the non supplement part of the magazine is organized nicely.

2012 Bronze Award: CHEST 2012 “Day in the Life of” Social Media Project

Social Media

Judge’s Comments: Very good use of twitter. If this were simply a Twitter category, they might win. But this show a great way to communicate what is happening at a conference to members.

2012 Bronze Award: MouthHealthy.org consumer website (in English and Spanish)

Web Sites

Judge’s Comments: This website has a colorful, friendly look and feel, with simple, striking visual brand elements throughout; a clear voice, uncluttered sense of purpose and theme (to get children interested in oral health).  There are calls to action on every page – the site is all about what you the viewer can do, eg find a dentist, find out about dental symptoms.  There are very clear tabs representing the different audiences the ADA wants to reach – pregnant women, kids, teens, adults at different life stages, each one “speaking to” that audience segment in simple, approachable language. Great kid section with games; and their “Stop Zombie Mouth” campaign becomes front and center on the iPad and mobile phone, focusing attention on that call to action – good use of different mobile formats.   Negatives – some of the internal pages could be simplified even more, and there seems to be a missed opportunity for more social media sharing elements, particularly for games which seem to be ripe for kids to want to “share with friends”.

2011 Gold Award: 2012 IFT Media Kit

Advertising Media Kit

Judge’s Comments: The IFT Media Kit is incredibly well laid out. What I particularly liked about this entry was how easy it is to navigate either while viewing online or printed out. Often times, media kits only work well in one of these formats. For the digital version, I loved the click-through option on the main page; when navigating a 21 page document this made it very easy. It had the most comprehensive editorial calendar which is incredibly helpful for targeting advertising. All of the specs and prices were also laid out making any outstanding questions null.

2011 Silver Award: 2012 LD+A Media Kit

Advertising Media Kit

Judge’s Comments: The LD+A kit was very well organized — no one could have a problem finding the necessary information looking at this kit. The design and bright colors were a nice addition but perhaps most importantly though, it was not overwhelming — in either design or content. I greatly liked the way they included the Insertion Order and Rate Card.

2011 Bronze Award: 2011 ALA Marketing Guide

Advertising Media Kit

Judge’s Comment: ALA took a very unique approach to their media kit, focusing on the strategy and benefits of advertising with them. The media kit was laid out in a way that made it seem you have a partner in advertising. Beginning with providing thorough demographics of the individuals advertiser’s will reach and all the way through customizing “your plan” they made it possible to see the whole picture. I could see this approach helping to engage someone who in the past would only think about print advertising to now look at web-based or in-person.
