2011 Gold Award: AAHPM Promotional Messaging Magnet

Promotional Items

Judge’s Comments: As mentioned by the entrant, the field of hospice and palliative medicine is a relatively new field in the US. This magnet, displayed in offices, does a fantastic job of portraying the benefits of this care to patients and caretakers. It is an easy to digest message and I love the way the font size and color are different when projecting the positive benefits. They took a rather ordinary promotional item and made it special and meaningful.

2011 Silver Award: The One Material You Trust: T-shirt Giveaway

Promotional Items

Judge’s Comments: The “Think Harder. Concrete” campaign t-shirt was a smart and effective way to deliver a range of messages in one format. Also, with natural disasters on the forefront of the news throughout the world, using the tagline “the one material you trust between you and a disaster. Think Harder. Concrete.” is just jarring enough without being offensive. An excellent and straightforward campaign.

2011 Gold Award: THE MONITOR, February 2011 issue

Scholarly/Technical/Scientific Journal

Judge’s Comments: The Monitor continues to set the bar for the 21st century journal. While articles are steeped in research, they are presented in a magazine-style way that is pleasing to the eye and easy to read. Graphics and color give it the modern feel needed to stay viable in an increasingly mobile world. Peer-reviewed articles are well-written and especially well-edited. It doesn’t appear that the magazine relies heavily on advertising; what ads there are seem to fit with the feel of the book. Well done, ACRP.

2011 Silver Award: American Journal of Orthodontics & Dentofacial Orthopedics

Scholarly/Technical/Scientific Journal

Judge’s Comments: AJO-DO consistently year after year brings its audience fine, well-documented research, and noticeably more demonstrative with art. A prevalent use of 4-color has spruced up the journal quite a bit from even a few years ago. Nice to know that copy in this issue was popular online for several months!

2011 Bronze Award: Educational Leadership, February 2011

Scholarly/Technical/Scientific Journal

Judge’s Comments: I like that it is colorful and has many ads (shows it’s not relying solely on member dues, which I think is a good thing). Also, the more magazine approach in graphics seems to work for its audience. The conversational writing approach seems to be how one education professional would talk with another.

2011 Gold Award: AICPA Social Media and AICPA Insights

Social Media

Judge’s Comment: The first thing that stands out about the American Institute of CPA’s is their thorough social media plan. Many social media plans will include one or two social networking sites, but the AICPA has embraced more than just Facebook and Twitter, they have utilized LinkedIn, YouTube and maintain an active blog. The use of LinkedIn is particularly impressive. LinkedIn can be a powerful tool for professional associations, and AICPA has leveraged it well. They maintain two groups, one closed for members only information and the other open to all people will an interest in the field. The careful attention they’ve paid to all of their social networks has paid off with impressive growth in their ability to connect, communicate and educate their members. The campaign is to be commended.

Judge’s Comment: TESOL International Association’s use of social media makes it stand apart from the rest. The Facebook page’s growth and engagement shows that through proper engagement social media is a powerful tool. The use of questions to engage members is something associations should take note of. Questions engage and challenge fans to interact, thereby creating a stronger community and generating organic social media growth. Judge’s Comment: This campaign was not only effective, but shows how strong partnerships can generate strong return. Trusted Choice grew organically because they were donating money to a well known charity. By tying the amount of money being donated to new likes, the association not only grew the social media base, but also generated incredible good will while solidifying a solid brand image.

2011 Gold Award: www.EatRight.org

Web Sites

Judge’s Comments: Head and shoulders above all other entries, eatright.org is exemplary from its domain name to its inviting, warm, human vibe.  The primary web site for the American Dietetic Association, eatright.org trumps all other entries on effectiveness, style, content, navigation, integration of social media, and features astonishing portraiture and photography.  Separate websites on food safety and children’s nutrition compound the excellence.  A triumph of collaboration, eatright.org puts the cause first and inspires the visitor to join the movement.
