2010 Bronze Award: American Mosquito Control Association – The 75 Year History

Commemoration / tribute

Judge’s Comments: This is a very detailed collection of events commemorating the association’s 75 years of existence and its growth. With organizational chronology, past presidents, awards, annual meetings, and public outreach example–mosquito control is captured for posterity. It has the feel of a yearbook. The unique treatment of the paper stock was a nice touch as were the archived photos.

2010 Gold Award: Memorial to Victims of Hartford Distributors Shooting

Commemoration / tribute

Judge’s Comments: Congressman John Larson (CT-1), representing the city of Manchester, remembered the victims and called for a moment of silence on the floor of the U.S. House of Representatives. During his remarks, Rep. Larson said, “Eight men went to work that morning. Some of them followed in the footsteps of their fathers and brothers before them. This is a family business. Many of whom have served and worked in this family business for over 20 years.” By interweaving various images and video clips, the tribute highlights how the distributorship celebrated the victims’ lives and how the community persisted during a difficult time. Positioned as a tribute during NBWA’s 73rd Annual Convention General Session, there could not have been a no dry eye in the room. This is a great example of a tribute that delivers maximum value.

2010 Bronze Award: 2009 ASA Annual Report

Annual Report

Judge’s Comments: Spritely and discreet, Strong. Smart. Successful walks its audience through a year filled with the achievements of an association awake to opportunities for the advancement of the vital profession it represents. The report offers strong advocacy for the profession, smart writing and design, and assurances that its management to is keyed to success in all regards.
A “Looking Ahead” page emphasizes pledges to strengthen and improve the association’s communications by: (a) expanding its Simulation Education Network and offering educational Webinars, podcasts and other distance-learning programs; (b), completely revamping the association Web site to make it more informative and user friendly; and (c), matching the technology available with the needs of members.
The perpendicular format makes possible the use of full-page color photographs of members in action. It opens immediately with the inside front cover and page 1 devoted to an introduction to the association’s past and future. It is signed by four activist officers.
In sum, the report is as practical and as neat as an anesthesiologist’s gown and as sharp as the needle he or she may have to use.

2010 Silver Award: 2009 Institute of Food Technologists Annual Report: Connection. Communication. Collaboration.

Annual Report

Judge’s Comments: The International Institute of Food Technologists uses its Web site to present a 24-page report covering a full range of activities that travel the connected world and showcase the Institute’s skills in international communication and in collaboration with others for maximum professional and organizational advancement. Emphasis is on excellent writing and organization by topics and interests. Design is basic and devoid of artistic flourishes. The association takes every opportunity to feature large, sharp color photographs of individuals and groups. The result is immediate reader appreciation of the computer’s ability to outdo many printed association reports in image clarity and size.
The Institute probably would never be able to afford printed reports for distribution to so wide an audience. This solution is one that every association should consider. The days of costly printed reports are all but over. The report meets all requirements for publication excellence.

2010 Gold Award: ABC 2009 Year in Review

Annual Report

Judge’s Comments: This report is tastefully bold, beautifully written, planned with precision, and designed throughout as a smart salute to its audience of builders and contractors. Consider the cover: A denim-clad arm clutches both a roll of construction plans and a blazingly yellow hard hat adorned with the association’s ABC logo. Rarely has an association publication captured the essence of its members’ work and professional life so neatly, so accurately, and so appealingly. The report is so cleverly crafted that the reader remains eager for more even after finishing it and knowing that he or she has been thoroughly briefed.
Photographs of members and association executives are ruggedly dynamic, with each face in sharp focus. Photos of tools of the trade are used discreetly throughout to provide handsome breaks in copy as needed. The Year in Review is sturdily constructed. Heavy glossy stock is used for both façade and inner walls. Associated Builders and Contractors has given its members a report that excels on all counts: Appearance, Style and Contents. It is targeted precisely to its member needs and interests, and it should be a highly effective tool in membership recruitment and retention. Used as an advocacy tool, it should have a warm reception on Capitol Hill and in statehouses.
