2010 Silver Award: Grain Brains Unite

Informational / Promotional Piece

Judge’s Comments: This brochure tells the association story and the benefits in a quick and easily understandable read. The writing is good, the layout is good and die-cut head makes the mailer stand out. To a prospect group that must have heard from this association often, the AACC promotion manages to break through and get the reader to reconsider joining and using the information available.

2010 Gold Award: Take Us for a Spin

Informational / Promotional Piece

Judge’s Comments: This is a good approach to a “free trial” membership. The outlook is light and colorful, the approach plainly spells out the Association membership benefits, conferences and other materials available when you join. Instead of the typical “our industry is under fire” political message or “times are bad but we are there for you,” this promotion hits the right note to get more members.

2010 Silver Award: Passenger Transport, July 5, 2010

Monthly Newsletter/Communication

Judge’s Comments: The breaking news section is vital in an industry publication covering such a hot topic, it was great to see it at the top of their newsletter. The content is high quality and the layout is clear and user friendly. The “People on the Move” section is a nice feature to highlight employment changes within the industry.

2010 Silver Award: Last Word, March 18, 2010

Weekly / Daily Member Communication

Judge’s Comments: The Last Word clear shows members what their organization has been doing to represent them in policy and legislation and also parses out information affecting each sector (water, transportation, building etc.) of their membership in the ACEC Newsline section. This allows readers to quickly locate the news they need. They also do a nice job of highlighting important resources including their job board and suggested reading.

2010 Bronze Award: American Christmas Tree Journal

Annual or Quarterly Publication – Organization budget up to $1-million

Judge’s Comments: The cover has a nostalgic, “old-timey” feel.  I also like the use of practical assessments and “how-tos” to engage membership.  The call to action “how you can participate” is fabulous; I love when publications can combine practicality with entertainment.

2010 Silver Award: International Wood: The Guide to Applications, Sources and Trends

Annual or Quarterly Publication – Organization budget up to $1-million

Judge’s Comments: Great cover! The perspective, lighting were fantastic, and the contrast of the fonts made the cover pop. The ads were all relevant to the publication audience, and the layout was crisp.  I like that though there was not a great amount of variance in the color palette, the selected colors complemented the “wood” focus of the association.  The publication is content-heavy without being overwhelming, and all content is relevant, no “filler text.”  I love the pullout reference guide on distributors. And as an added bonus, the publication smelled like wood!
