2010 Bronze Award: LD+A 2011 Media Kit

Advertising Media Kit

Judge’s Comments: Incredible pictures and a clean layout give this media kit the “awe factor.”  It’s attractive, edgy, and well-organized.  The media kit has a great editorial calendar–very important for a publication like this.

2010 Silver Award: NFDA’s 2011 Media Kit

Advertising Media Kit

Judge’s Comments: REALLY good reader information, clear and informative. It also has a great layout which is easy to follow and find and seems to only include the really important and relevant information. It isn’t too text heavy which is helpful. The clear split on each of the two publications and the inclusion of the conference information was clear without being too much.

Entrant’s Notes

Our media kit did three exceptional things for the National Funeral Directors Association:

  1. Increased the visibility of the association within the supplier/vendor community.
  2. Helped suppliers and vendors better understand the ways the association helps companies connect with members and show support for the profession.
  3. Helped build suppliers’ and vendors’ interest in new opportunities to market their products and services to association members.

2010 Gold Award: 2011 PMA Fresh Magazine Media Kit

Advertising Media Kit

Judge’s Comments: Produce Marketing Association: This advertising kit does a great job laying out the rationale for why you should both subscribe and advertise to Fresh Magazine. It hits on the 360 degree view of the publication’s content and readership and demographics in a clear and easily digestible format. They have one of the — if not the best — editorial calendars with clear information on deadlines and content. However, it is important to note that as a quarterly they may have an advantage in this degree. The cost information is clearly laid out for the print section though I wish the digital costs were explained better (i.e. maybe someone doesn’t understand what a “ad-gen” or “ad-jolt” is). I really like that the “take a tour” section leading the reader to the digital version — it is a nice way to limit the content while still giving the opportunity to see more for those who prefer it.

2010 Gold Award: Texting While Driving is a Distraction – Don’t Do It!

Public Service Announcement

Judge’s Comments: The PSA works to remind people of the dangers of texting while driving. The visual image of broken glass and blood are shocking, but a vivid reminder of what is at stake while driving. The phrase “OMG,” meaning “Oh my God,” also holds significance as a common phrase in texting to express surprise or shock, and a car accident would certainly evoke that reaction.

Entrant Notes

  • More than 500,000 crashes each year are attributed to texting and driving, and more than 1.3 million accidents result from distracted driving.
  • Orthopaedic surgeons are the specialists who put bones and limbs back together after road accidents and trauma – they would rather help all drivers decide to drive each time they get in the car and to keep bones and limbs healthy.
  • This ad is the first step in educating the public in what has become a commonplace practice among drivers. Spread the word, save a friend. For more information, visit ota.org/donttext or aaos.org/donttext.

2010 Bronze Award: 2010 A Day in the Life of a NASA Food Scientist

Informational CD, Video or Podcast

Judge’s Comments: The informational video explains how space food is made. Any person who dreamed of being an astronaut can revisit his or her old dreams in a wonky adult way.  While the concept of freeze dried space food is familiar to most, the video takes the viewer through the steps of creating a meal. With strong production quality and compelling information, this video stands out above most other enteries.

2010 Silver Award: The Dangers of Alcohol Deregulation: The United Kingdom Experience vs. American Alcohol Regulation

Informational CD, Video or Podcast

Judge’s Comments: The Center for Alcohol Policy’s video is both compelling and informative. They manage to capture the audience while educating viewers on alcohol related deaths and accidents, comparing rates in countries with lax regulation to the United States. To make thick policy accessible in a short video is a challenge that the Center for Alcohol Policy certainly overcame.

2010 Bronze Award: Children’s National Medical Center Hospital Brochure

Informational / Promotional Piece

Judge’s Comments: It is not often one sees a brochure in both English and Arabic. This plush introduction to Children’s Hospital in Washington is a way to show families in two cultures — the USA and the Arab world the quality of their medicine. This promotion is linked with the branch office in Abu Dhabi, UAE, that does preliminary work for patients in the Arabic speaking world.  Both brochures use the same pictures and appear to reach their goal:  quality medical care for your child in an environment that you will feel comfortable in as well.  The brochure is much more expensive than usual — and not just because of the second language but the prospects are high income, highly successful families that expect this sort of information. This brochure does that mission well.
