2013 Gold Award: Associations Now

Monthly Professional Society Magazine

Judge’s Comments: This title has all the elements of a gold winning entry. The recent redesign draws readers into the issue starting with a strong cover photo and logo. Each column and department is cleverly designed with call out quotes, fun infographics, photography and illustrations. There is also a strong tie to the website, apps and social media throughout the issue. The opening cover feature has strong graphics and typography that invite the reader to turn the page. The subsequent features are equally impressive and varied. The content throughout the issue is excellent.

2013 Gold Award: IFIC Foundation – Food Biotechnology: A Communicator’s Guide to Improving Understanding, 3rd Edition

Most Improved Magazine or Journal

Judge’s Comments: Paradigm shift in presentation of content offering major upgrade of engagement by user–font, paper, format, color…everything. NOW it is a guide encouraging communication…before it was lots of paper in a binder. Taking that big step to “improve” says much about their commitment to walk their talk. Well Done!!!

2013 Gold Award: Manufacturing Advocacy Video Brochure

Promotional Items

Judge’s Comments: The NAM piece was above and beyond impressive for a number of reasons. The paper leave behind is quite frankly overdone and more often than not gets lost in the paperwork chaos of a Congressional office. This video brochure takes things to the next level and not only shows compelling interviews from key NAM staff, it also highlights the innovative mindset the industry has developed. A fantastic piece, I’m dying to use this type of piece in my own marketing efforts.

2013 Gold Award: Clinical Pharmacology & Therapeutics

Scholarly/Technical/Scientific Journal

Judge’s Comments: CP&T has found a nice balance between traditional journal and a modern approach. Its use of color not only helps to demonstrate the information but breaks up what can be very gray pages. Given that there is no outside advertising, I’m not completely sold on the large areas of white space, which I think could be used for the association’s promotional purposes, but the writing is on par with its audience, the articles nicely support the theme of the issue.

2013 Gold Award: Fueled by ACS

Social Media

Judge’s Comments: Fantastic campaign to attract students to the ACS National meeting, reaching out to students within 500 miles of the conference location and encouraging them to post pictures of their “roadtrip to Indy” for chance to get their gas money reimbursed.  Well thought out strategy that appealed to younger people, that used visual elements that are so attractive on social media, that enabled easy sharing through the hashtag, and that offered something for the participant as well as great content curation (lots of photos for future use!) and brand awareness at the same time.  Social media savviness combined with a timely call to action and community-building – a perfect campaign in every respect.

2013 Silver Award: LD+A 2014 Media Kit

Advertising Media Kit

Judge’s Comments: LD+A — This had one of the best overall designs of the entries. It was a crisp, well-organized design and similar to the NACE entry, the tabs help potential advertisers quickly get to the relevant information. The content was well written and had the right information about the audience advertisers would want to know before deciding to advertise. The editorial calendar was well laid out with the right information for booking advertising as well as a good overview of what would be featured in that month’s issue. I also enjoyed the slide out rate cards, I could see it being very helpful for frequent advertisers to pull out and have handy in their office.

2013 Silver Award: 2012 Annual Report

Annual Report

Judge’s Comments: We tend to shy away from annual reports that are heavy on informational text, believing it to be a deterrent to effective communication of an organization’s programs and financial status. However, given the nature of the Better Business Bureau’s structure and broad reach of its work, it would be hard not to have a 35-page report including everything that could reasonably be presented in its annual report. This report accomplishes the presentation of much information in a publication half that size that is pleasing to look at and interesting to read. We especially commend the inclusion of smaller pamphlets providing information about two important programs of the BBB in pockets on the inside front and back covers. This was a creative way to include more information, yet keep the main body of the report to a smaller size.
