2013 Silver Award: Be A Leader

Membership Promotion Kit or Campaign

Judge’s Comments: Be a Leader Membership Recruitment Campaign, submitted by the American Bar Association, recruits new members through the power of storytelling. With a multimedia campaign, ABA captured over 100 member stories from members. The campaign is vivid and bright — draws the user in with the dynamic use of headshots and quotes. The design is crisp and clean and ideal for this audience.

Monthly Professional Society Magazine

Judge’s Comments: The statement of purpose of this entry explains that this entry is an “excellent example of how the magazine covers the industry, offering a lively mix of sharply written, stylishly designed feature articles and departments that both inform and entertain readers. Each column and department uses design elements for breakout quotes for easy reading and navigation. There are several links to the website and social media throughout the issue directing the reader to find additional information. 2013 Silver Award: RTOHQ – The Magazine

Monthly Trade Association Magazine

Judge’s Comments: The reader is quickly drawn into this title starting with the striking cover and larger 9 x 10 7/8 trim size. This trim size “affects the design in subtle ways, incorporating design elements that are more square or horizontal, with not as many vertical elements used in typical magazines.” The executive director’s welcome letter encourages members to go on the website to watch videos from the recent conference or to access them from a daily e-newsletter. The very clean design is readable with interesting typography, graphics and photography. This issue is very accessible to the readers through its compelling content and design.

2013 Silver Award: Educational Leadership, May 2013 “The Faces of Poverty”

Scholarly/Technical/Scientific Journal

Judge’s Comments: EL is a perennial winner in this category, and justifiably so. The editors do a great job in packaging a theme with great supportive and readable articles. The journal also strikes a nice advertising:copy balance. There is little consistency in the layout, however, and at times you get the feeling that they are filling pages with design elements. Given that its frequency is nine times a year, it would be nice to see a bit more substantial writing.

2013 Silver Award: Promoting A4A’s Don’t Ground America Campaign through Twitter

Social Media

Judge’s Comments: Great example of the power of social media in crisis communications.  When the FAA announced air traffic controller furloughs, meaning widespread flight delays and cancellations, A4A responded within 24 hours through their social media channels, and specifically Twitter, to build grassroots support for legislation to fix the situation and end the furloughs.  This campaign is a perfect case study for the need to have an online presence before you need it, to build trust in your community so that when an industry crisis occurs, the community will support you – so that not only can you respond to the crisis and make change happen, but you also build brand awareness and grow that community of supporters at the same time.  Textbook, and awesome.

2013 Silver Award: Venturescape 2013, National Venture Capital Association Annual Meeting

Web Sites

Judge’s Comments: Great, strategic, confidently designed upgrade that is not afraid to have a personality.  A conference site that has truly taken into account the audience it seeks to attract, putting four main elements front and center – a speakers corner showing off influential speakers, a rock concert, the “world’s largest VC Office hours”, and Deep Dives related to deeper session content relevant to the industry.  Great, simplified mobile experience. This site meshes the offline and online beautifully to create a digital experience that will surely attract lots of new members to their conference.
