2012 Silver Award: IE3 Indoor Environment & Energy Efficiency

Most Improved Magazine or Journal

Judge’s Comments: This is a true redesign, from a new look, a new distribution rate, new paper stock, new feel in the way it looks and reads. Better edited and tighter articles. Layout is crisp and not as loud or in your face as its predecessor, Contractor Excellence. And whoa, QR Codes — pushing the print reader to mobile technology. Even the advertising is stepped up. Good move, ACCA!

2012 Silver Award: Eat Right Calendar

Promotional Items

Judge’s Comments: Visually alone this calendar is impressive but I was even more pleased to discover its three fold purpose to promote upcoming events, the Journal’s member photo contest and member engagement made it even more appealing. How wonderful to discover that all of the photos were from members!

2012 Silver Award: Journal of Shellfish Research

Scholarly/Technical/Scientific Journal

Judge’s Comments: I’ve watched this journal over the years, and like that it is embracing — even if slightly — a more modern feel with good color photographs and legible charts. A nice improvement over the years.

2012 Silver Award: AssociationsNow.com

Web Sites

Judge’s Comments: The Associations Now website has a fully responsive design, meaning it adjusts based on what device the viewer is using to view it – not just by size of text and screen, but in what content is viewable and how the user navigates through it.  This site has a modern, striking design, and many dynamic elements. Topics and categories are simple yet relevant.  Related articles are connected to each other skillfully, encouraging the viewer to dig deeper into the site, although the navigation encourages serendipity (surfing) rather than a planned path.  There are multiple layers of engagement for readers – subscribing by email, daily newsletter feed with just headlines, subscribing to the blog RSS feed, daily trending topics, social commenting.  Very nice author page showcasing the main blog authors.  One negative – no sharing buttons on individual posts!

2012 Bronze Award: Forward Magazine | Media Kit 2013

Advertising Media Kit

Judge’s Comments: Comment on Bronze Winner MSCI — The Forward magazine media kit was well organized and designed. While it was not the “flashiest” design it also wasn’t lacking. More importantly, the content was well written and it was very clear for me, as a potential advertiser, who I would be reaching and what I would get for my investment. I really liked that the advertising kit included a quote from a reader, while others included quotes from other advertisers, this was a unique advantage. I also liked that in addition to the editorial calendar, the kit included an overview of their “regular departments,” providing a bit more information about the content advertisements would be featured with.

2012 Bronze Award: International Wood: The Guide to Applications, Sources & Trends (2012)

Annual or Quarterly Magazine or Journal

Judge’s Comments: Beautiful photos and layout, befitting the content. However, sometimes it was hard to distinguish between advertising from editorial by glance-through. Hairline dividing lines might be the easy fix. Great article on “man caves,” especially since differing views are included, demonstrating an editorial objectivity sometimes not found in association publications. Like the editorial tone, too, casual and my guess, perfect for the intended reader.

2012 Bronze Award: Asphalt Institute 2011 Annual Report

Annual Report

Judge’s Comments: This entrant was far and away the “sexiest” of all of the entrants, with its silk paper and minimalist exterior graphics, and it ran a very close third to the second place winner for some of the same reasons — well written text and coverage of accomplishments. The interior graphic design was fabulous and internally consistent, although was a different look than what we had expected from the cover and the first few pages. This association clearly values each of its members and affiliates — as indicated by the inclusion of their logos on the first two-page spread. And the introduction was one of the best statements of mission and vision that we’ve read. This earned extra points because this is one of the most important qualities of a document that is often used in the recruitment of new members. However, it was somewhat text heavy and the fact that there were so many uncaptioned photos was diminished the effectiveness of including them.
