2013 Silver Award: LD+A 2014 Media Kit

Advertising Media Kit
LD+A 2014 Media Kit

Judge’s Comments: LD+A – This had one of the best overall designs of the entries. It was a crisp, well-organized design and similar to the NACE entry, the tabs help potential advertisers quickly get to the relevant information. The content was well written and had the right information about the audience advertisers would want to know before deciding to advertise. The editorial calendar was well laid out with the right information for booking advertising as well as a good overview of what would be featured in that month’s issue. I also enjoyed the slide out rate cards, I could see it being very helpful for frequent advertisers to pull out and have handy in their office.

2013 Silver Award: 2012 Annual Report

Annual Report
2012 Annual Report

Judge’s Comments: We tend to shy away from annual reports that are heavy on informational text, believing it to be a deterrent to effective communication of an organization’s programs and financial status. However, given the nature of the Better Business Bureau’s structure and broad reach of its work, it would be hard not to have a 35-page report including everything that could reasonably be presented in its annual report. This report accomplishes the presentation of much information in a publication half that size that is pleasing to look at and interesting to read. We especially commend the inclusion of smaller pamphlets providing information about two important programs of the BBB in pockets on the inside front and back covers. This was a creative way to include more information, yet keep the main body of the report to a smaller size.

Earning the highest points in Content, this book is designed to pull you in at every spread with its multiple points of entry. The extensive compilation of historical facts and photos, and the display of historical documents make this piece a true commemorative piece—one that NACE International can be quite proud of.

2013 Silver Award: 2012 NMHC OpTech Conference and Exposition Program

Convention Program
2012 NMHC OpTech Conference and Exposition Program

Judge’s Comments: This program was at the top of our list during the initial pass through the contest entrants, until we encountered the overall excellence of the first place winner, but it is a very close second. The idea of putting a conference program into a virtually-pocket-sized booklet seems so basic – yet very few convention planners opt for this format. But to qualify as a winner, the design and substance of the publication also have to measure up. From the tabs that provide ready access to all of the necessary information – Agenda/Exhibitors/Sponsors – and the maps of the convention space and exhibitor hall that are right up front, to the design that is easy to read, easy to follow and very informative throughout, this is a top-notch program from start to finish.

2013 Silver Award: First Look at ACTFL 2013

Convention Promotion Package
First Look at ACTFL 2013

Judge’s Comments: Another interactive approach in a small form—as a 1st look/reminder about the event it pre-empts the audience’s questions in an engaging way by “unfolding” as the communication continues. Colorful, visually simple, straight forward text, and compact.

2013 Silver Award: AICPA News Update

Daily or Weekly Communication
AICPA News Update

Judge’s Comments: AICPA always produces strong efforts (landing in the winners’ circle each of the last three years).* They just get “it,” with concise content, including member-oriented news stories, updates, and how-to articles. Marked improvements and attention to detail show in this year’s major relaunch, which showcase expanded feature sections to include video, LinkedIn conversations and media mentions.

2013 Silver Award: MCA Chicago Safety Kit

Direct Marketing Piece/Promotion
MCA Chicago Safety Kit

Judge’s Comments: Well, this is overwhelming. This mailer goes to show that “lumpy mail” rather than a regular mailing can have impact. The products and services arrive looking like the latest Harry & David box. It’s quite impressive first impression. It makes you want to dive into each item and find out if they are for you! The cost on such a mailing makes this a very, very special mailing.  This type of mailing could be paying dividends for years to come, word of mouth alone would continue for years
