Connecting the Dots

Judge’s Comments: Connecting the Dots from the Metals Service Center Institute is a content-rich, news-oriented advocacy e-newsletter. The design allows C-level executives to skim headlines easily, and there are also multiple links to stories and resources that create a “deep bench” image. Of special note: resources are provided in both English and Spanish.

2012 Bronze Award: Last Word – April 24, 2012

Daily or Weekly Communication

Last Word - April 24, 2012

Judge’s Comments: American Council of Engineering Companies’ Last Word is full of news-oriented content with clear connections to membership interests. Regular charts, photos, and features pass along information in a mostly-graphic way. Photo captions convey almost as much detail as the stories themselves. The April 2012 issue was particularly robust, because it contained post-conference coverage.

Appraiser News Online

Judge’s Comments: Appraiser News Online is sent out weekly by The Appraisal Institute. The newsletter utilizes easy-to-scan headlines and story summaries, relevant graphic elements and economic indicator charts to keep readers coming back each week. The well-designed left-hand navigation bar keeps members focused mostly on the articles within an issue. (Note: Some of the weekly content is re-purposed for use in their monthly member communications. That’s just smart recycling.)

New Jersey School Board Association On-Line School Board Notes

Judge’s Comments: The New Jersey School Boards Association’s School Board Notes combines text with embedded video and links to Internet radio shows. There’s a quick-scan headline/summary section with links to full stories, a right-hand interactive calendar, and tabs to allow members to jump to the association’s home page and archives. To encourage reader return involvement, there’s a monthly poll, with results featured in the next issue. Clean design, readability, and good use of color photos make this weekly a winner.
