2011 Gold Award: THE MONITOR, February 2011 issue

Judge’s Comments: The Monitor continues to set the bar for the 21st century journal. While articles are steeped in research, they are presented in a magazine-style way that is pleasing to the eye and easy to read. Graphics and color give it the modern feel needed to stay viable in an increasingly mobile world. Peer-reviewed articles are well-written and especially well-edited. It doesn’t appear that the magazine relies heavily on advertising; what ads there are seem to fit with the feel of the book. Well done, ACRP.

Judge’s Comments: AJO-DO consistently year after year brings its audience fine, well-documented research, and noticeably more demonstrative with art. A prevalent use of 4-color has spruced up the journal quite a bit from even a few years ago. Nice to know that copy in this issue was popular online for several months!

Judge’s Comments: I like that it is colorful and has many ads (shows it’s not relying solely on member dues, which I think is a good thing). Also, the more magazine approach in graphics seems to work for its audience. The conversational writing approach seems to be how one education professional would talk with another.

Judge’s Comments: A triumph of design for a single color journal! I like the length of the articles and the tone; many medical journals can be overly scholarly and long, but this journal seems to find a nice middle-ground balance without compromising quality of content. I also found the commentary by president Carlos Jimenez very interesting.
