2012 Gold Award: ThisWayToCPA.com

Web Sites

ThisWayToCPA.com

Judge’s Comments: This website is simply fantastic.  Its audience (the person studying for their CPA) is very clearly defined and the value they will get from the site very obvious and immediate. There’s an instant call to action for the viewer (“tell us where you are, get hand picked stuff”) to self identify as being at a specific stage of their CPA professional development; and once they identify themselves, the site becomes tailored to what content they need. There are other calls to action related to member recruitment, which are constantly showing the WIIFM (what’s in it for me) value to the viewer of becoming a member.  The entire site is designed to be about the viewer, not about the association, which is rare and refreshing to see.  The site also has a fresh, informal, even humorous tone that is engaging and draws the viewer in deeper, and fun design elements that reflect that personality. The only negative – the site is not easily viewable on a mobile phone, however this is compensated by having a separate, fully integrated CPA Exam Aid mobile app. This site makes you want to go become a CPA. Truly awesome.

2012 Silver Award: AssociationsNow.com

Web Sites

AssociationsNow.com

Judge’s Comments: The Associations Now website has a fully responsive design, meaning it adjusts based on what device the viewer is using to view it – not just by size of text and screen, but in what content is viewable and how the user navigates through it.  This site has a modern, striking design, and many dynamic elements. Topics and categories are simple yet relevant.  Related articles are connected to each other skillfully, encouraging the viewer to dig deeper into the site, although the navigation encourages serendipity (surfing) rather than a planned path.  There are multiple layers of engagement for readers – subscribing by email, daily newsletter feed with just headlines, subscribing to the blog RSS feed, daily trending topics, social commenting.  Very nice author page showcasing the main blog authors.  One negative – no sharing buttons on individual posts!

2012 Bronze Award: MouthHealthy.org consumer website (in English and Spanish)

Web Sites

MouthHealthy.org consumer website (in English and Spanish)

Judge’s Comments: This website has a colorful, friendly look and feel, with simple, striking visual brand elements throughout; a clear voice, uncluttered sense of purpose and theme (to get children interested in oral health).  There are calls to action on every page – the site is all about what you the viewer can do, eg find a dentist, find out about dental symptoms.  There are very clear tabs representing the different audiences the ADA wants to reach – pregnant women, kids, teens, adults at different life stages, each one “speaking to” that audience segment in simple, approachable language. Great kid section with games; and their “Stop Zombie Mouth” campaign becomes front and center on the iPad and mobile phone, focusing attention on that call to action – good use of different mobile formats.   Negatives – some of the internal pages could be simplified even more, and there seems to be a missed opportunity for more social media sharing elements, particularly for games which seem to be ripe for kids to want to “share with friends”.

2011 Gold Award: www.EatRight.org

Web Sites

www.EatRight.org

Judge’s Comments: Head and shoulders above all other entries, eatright.org is exemplary from its domain name to its inviting, warm, human vibe.  The primary web site for the American Dietetic Association, eatright.org trumps all other entries on effectiveness, style, content, navigation, integration of social media, and features astonishing portraiture and photography.  Separate websites on food safety and children’s nutrition compound the excellence.  A triumph of collaboration, eatright.org puts the cause first and inspires the visitor to join the movement.
